48TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY - (POST # 20) (29 SEP.)

And still just as argumentative together as we were 49 years ago

And still moving ! And still with dogs and cats, the list goes on, and is scary, after the current sell-down for the boat move-in, we own just about all that we owned back in 1968 when our "honeymoon?" trip from California to Ohio started this mayhem.

It simply has never stopped, following the work, and zig-zagging around the Caribbean, Central and North America, move after move after move. This "lock" into Lane County has been with us as a home base since the 1970's (after I worked here in the mid-1960s,) we almost can say "we have never lived anywhere twice", but have returned to Lane county now some seven times ! no wonder, Florence is a drop anchor place.

TRAPS - POST # 21 (28 SEP. )

ANIMAL TRAPS, CRAB TRAPS, REAL ESTATE TRAPS, LOAN TRAPS, LEGAL TRAPS, MARRIAGE TRAPS, ad nauseum.

All are opened with "MONEY" . . .  and you are freed.

OR TRAPPED.

It is another "ashore" pitfall, it ensnares you hopelessly like the guy tied down on the beach . . . in Gullivers' Travels, another reason to deal only with creatures of the sea rather than land lubbers.

This is another area of conditioned brainwashing we receive from birth, I alluded to this in an earlier post, you simply are victimized by a land-society environ and inbred set of rules and thinking that is millions ? of years old (that is, unless you believe the "Aquatic Ape Evolution" hominid theory).

The quandry is how to break free, you are surrounded by envious (trapped) whistleblowers who will always not  allow "you" to get out, if they can't, (not that they "would" even if given the chance . . . it is too bold and independent), they prefer to follow the herd, and traditions of their upbringing.

So, when you are well established, with excellent credit, and decide to sell your home BUT.... not buy another ...
As lets say, moving to your RV or boat, your being well established and having excellent credit is now meaningless, you just lost both . . . by not having a brick and mortar dwelling, and by not staying in the herd or following the rules of traditional landlubbering.

I applied for a boat loan, and was denied due to the ratio of my retirement gross income vs. my outgo (the house payment was too high), so, I sold the house . . . put the substantial profits into my savings, and moved aboard the boat, then reapplied for the same loan (now, without the house payment in play), the loan was now denied because I could not supply a "permanent land based" address of residency, a "mobile" residence is unacceptable, a boat is not a "home or residence".

A mobile phone is OK though, but a PO box, or forwarding cruiser service is not "rooted" enough to be considered a residence, you must sleep in a house . . . tents, boats, rv's, cardboard boxes, under bridges, jail, or a friends house will simply not do, you "must" show proof that you pay for a conventional shelter, pay taxes, show a Electric bill, and have home (not boat or RV) insurance, (did you know voting, food stamps, and drivers Licenses and food banks all require the same ?).

WTF ? - POST # 20 (27 SEP.)

THAT ... was unexpected,

Yugo, one of our ship's cats, has never seen a Sea Gull before, the Royal Navy banned cats from all British ships in 1975, sailors and cats have a special relationship that dates back thousands of years.

The ancient Egyptians were the first seafarers to realize the true value of having cats as shipmates. In addition to offering sailors much needed companionship on long voyages, cats provided protection by ridding ships of vermin. Without the presence of cats, a crew might find their ship overrun with rats and mice that would eat into the provisions, chew through ropes and spread disease.

More superstitious sailors believed that cats protected them by bringing good luck. It was also common for crews to adopt cats from the foreign lands they visited to serve as souvenirs as well as reminders of their pets at home.

we have always had cats, never just one . . . usually 2-4 at a time, some 40 years ago we quit ever allowing them outside, so, we "live" with our cats. because of the close interface with us and the dogs (usually 2), and our living in busses, motels, on boats, and travelling heavily our cats take on a different personality.  We moved to a boat with a bird-lover cat, who used to love stalking birds out the window, when we moved aboard the Big Flamingo, he got his first encounter with Pelicans on deck....

For us, Plan "B" surfaced today . . . we contacted two of our neighbors, one owns a electrical contracting business, the other owns the local real estate.  We added in $10,000 to the sale price to cover real estate fees and this upgrade, and re-listed it today ! and, had the other neighbor begin the needed electric panel work (it will be done tomorrow) for a thousand less and 20 days sooner than what the cancelled buyers bids were for.

"START" OR "BEGINNING" ? - POST # 19 (26 SEP.)

FINISH OR END ?

The house buyer backed out ! the good ole' Oregon handshake deal is gone, dead, fini'e . . . not working anymore. We just wasted 30 very valuable good-sea conditions, and boat contract days ! My decades-old insight on Real Estate agents bore fruit again, rotten fruit, but fruit.

Had we not involved a real estate at all, but our attorney instead, this would be a done deal . . . unfortunately (as in the past) the realtor involved had other (insider) self-serving options for the buyer. (these of course are confidential client-reamer).

BUT . . .we are restarting the push , and, pulling out the stops, for a reorganizing effort, starting today. 50 days left to roust the money for the boat contract, and my idea mill is grinding away, now desperate for new money sources.

CONFIDENTIAL - POST # 18 (25 SEP.)

I can not talk about this . . . it's "Confidential"

The classification system of the US is a three-level plateau system, with "Confidential","Secret" and "Top Secret" grades of clearance, there are others below that . . .  "Sensitive", "Private", "FYI", "NTK" and "Personal" but, the criteria is not vetted or a security protocall, but more of a guide.

Like many things in man's social world, that ares created for a reason, some frequently are  abused and used in non-intended ways, let us even say "mis-applied". . . in business and military we use patents, and Faraday cages, black-rooms, scrambling devices, security cops, and even sequestering of personel to protect designs, R & D testing, and sometimes even production.

It is a big-business being a spy, and/or head hunting-away the key people, taking info/pictures, and stealing data. The methodologies are well thought out, and identical in all realms of Society (Medicine, Space, Military, Government, etc.) but, now I know they also exist in Real Estate !

Why just think about it . . . how cool it would be to attach such an important skill to your Real Estate license.  Maria Gueterrez, Broker (Secret Clearance) . . . being not a Government Agency the "Freedom of Information Act" cannot be applied here, and you can create your own Real Estate Espionage Act of 1917Atomic Energy Act of 1954 or even a Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982 level system, and police it like Homeland Security, FEMA or NCS, even CTU.

Think of the prestige, the one-upsmanship, the ego-boost you will get being an esteemed "Secret" Real Estate Agent, you can hide your lack of knowledge, experience or ability easily by simply uttering "I am sorry, I cannot comment-my Agent/Buyer representation details are "SECRET" ! (I cannot discuss it with you), then, you can drop back, and have the time to do whatever research, updating, or studying you need without revealing to the questioner your flummoxed  incompetence.

I used to work with a MIT engineer who repeatedly would say "I cannot discuss that" as if he was a secret agent, and only he was privy to know such things, in the field (the trenches) his lack of education, brain-power and resilience to respond roared at you (but, I can't tell you any more than that because you see, its "Confidential").

"Honey, did you fill up the car today?" . . . "Dear, I cannot allow you to know that, you see it is a Credit-card Confidential matter", "Billie, did you finish your homework?"  "Rover, did you crap in the neighbors yard?", "Can I get change for this twenty?", "Do you think that tire is low on air?", none of this is answerable you see, because we have mis-applied the "spirit" of secrecy and need-to-know . . . I sleep better at night knowing our nations' Real Estate transactions are secure from sharing and insight though, and I have a new disrespect for Sharia law, Port-a-potty servicers, corruption, child sex trafficking,  and real estate agents.

WHITE CRICKET - (POST # 15)

Still ashore at the old land-home, with no furniture or draperies it is like a echo cave, empty and with all hard surfaced floors to boot, 2AM this morning, I am awakened by a very loud high-pitched alarm wail, ear piercing to almost pain (at least to my decible/pitch range) . . . it is constant, and pervasive.

Fearful, I jump out of bed and follow the source to the utility room (all the while trying to imagine a possible cause or device that could emit such a blast of sound), in the dark, and expecting anything... I am almost brought to cross-eyed pain when at ear height I find it.

A 2mm long tan lacewing on the inside back door glass.

He will not shut off ! turn the light on, almost touch him, no change-just debilitating noise. I open the door cup my hands around him and escort him outside (to "his" world, and "out" of mine), whew !

Online I learn the bugologists and scientific world is filled with idiots (there are no online recordings, accurate information, or true knowledge about lacewings in general) most of these people have read "someone elses" information on them, but has never seen one.

These pseudo-scientist types refer to these guys by their latin names (yea, I was really impressed too), but, then they compare this little guy to cicadas, jarflys, crickets, and seven toed Canadian Moose.
So, here is "my" story on lacewings:

These little guys look like a cross between a winged Termite, a Canadian Soldier (Mayfly), and a Katydid . . . only with a much smaller body, and out-of-proportion oversized see-through wings, I have seen them in light green or tan colors, a inch long is the biggest I have ever seen. BUT . . . i never knew they made noise ! (and neither do the bug-experts).

We always blame frogs for that nighttime din, but, I was just educated that for 73 years I was wrong, it is a combo of creatures that make Oregon nights so loud.

But on to the best part of this, the folklore.

Last nights episode is an omen, not to be taken lightly as we close-out the sale of this house (the appraisal was this morning), and, the deadline for all of the inspection/appraisal reports is two days away.

For thousands of years the many cultures around the world have developed tales about night singing crickets, frogs, and insects . . . the trending is almost aligned: China, the Caribbean, and India believe a loud one means good luck or money is coming in, black ones are bad, green is good, and white/tan is divine.

So, we will see what Mr. Lacewing precludes when Tuesday rolls around.

PULLING OUT PLAN "B" - (# 14) 22 September, 2016

Long, narrow rocky river-no charts, navigating in the dark . . .

My Oakridge home buyer has a big city realty (Windermere) "friend-of-the-family" realtor, assisting them (covertly) in purchasing our sold "as-is" by owner country home.

I intentionally did not want any real estate involvement....(which is why I Craig listed it myself !)  over the years, I have been extensively/repeatedly exposed to these business varmits, and know well of their many devious, insider schemes, advantages and lies  . . .  making realtors/boat brokers/attorneys/politicians/religious nut cases and most recently . . . Doctors, all the enemy.

But, it "is" what it "is", now, everything is hush-hush (sort of like a Real estate HIPPA), they cannot/willnot talk to me, its classified info.

It looks like tomorrow the appraiser will be here 9AM, and that by Monday the 26th 5:PM both, the appraisal and the inspection reports must be in and on record. (credit and loan approval is already granted, and over with).

The next move by them will be to give us a Sales Addendum (or no addendum at all), which could include repairs or some sort of tricky price reduction scheme.  we think that very top secret info will be in-hand by the 29th or 30th.

Not knowing what to expect, and dealing with a 7 day after closing eviction notice (no place to sleep), or "possibly" a reduced final cash settlement on this house .... making me short of my boat money needs.

When this is all over, I will post all of my realty-rant pages now being witheld ....

I just pulled out plan "B" and activated my two old marine financing companies for possible help (in case I need it), it will take them most likely until Monday to either quit laughing, or grant me a "ready to use" boat loan... BUT...... going boat loan, "WILL" require a $2500 dollar "cash" haul-out and Survey !  (which is why we avoided loans) we have a Charleston (non-Portland big-city) surveyor lined up, and expect a $2500 dollar ordeal of survey/haul-out/bottom clean-paint-zincs/pressure wash/repair/refloat expense in Winchester Bay before taking the boat up to Florence.

ORGANIZE IT ! - POST # 13

The biggest point I cannot seem to relay to inquisitive people, is just how extreme moving to a boat "is" . . . and, how we can only take on board 1/2 (half !) of what we loaded on board our 40 foot Trailways Scenicruiser (GM Buffalo) bus/RV.

Both are 40 foot long, but the Buffalo had full length, 4 Foot high full-width underneath baggage storage, and, towed the truck behind.

Now, we have an assigned harbor parking lot space, and a 10 x 10 warehouse space, and the boat is even 5 foot wider, but vee shaped. In the end, the "BIG" point should be to realize just how much you "do not" need on a boat:

LAWN SPRINKLER, RAILROAD BAR, ROOFING TIN SHEARS, NAILS OF ANY TYPE, EXTENSION LADDER, WHEEL BARROW,  GARDEN SHEARS, TRELLIS-WORK, HOOP SAW, GARDEN SPRAYER, LANDSCAPE CLOTH, SCYTHE, ROUNDUP WEED KILLER, FAUCET & VENT INSULATION, A WALL BOARD TEE, STEP LADDER, FENCE POSTS,TREE TRIM SNIPS, GARDEN EDGING, SHOVELS, WATERING CAN, WEED EATER, ROCK SALT,  LAWN MOWER, EXTENDED TREE SAW, CHAIN-LINK PARTS, GARDEN RAKE, CONCRETE DRILL BITS, RAIN-GUTTER PARTS, SNOW BLOWER, POST HOLE DRIVER, NAIL SETS, HATCHET, FENCE PLIERS, GUTTER CLEANING TOOL, WOOD AX, GRASS RAKE, BASE BOARD TOOL, DRIVEWAY CLEANER, PITCH FORK, ROOF SCRAPER, PAINT SPRAYER, A LEVEL, CONCRETE MIXER, HEDGE TRIMMER, PICK AX, CONCRETE CHISELS, LEAF BLOWER, SPLITTING MAUL, CLAW HAMMER, GARDEN HOE, CHAIN SAW, PLANTING TROWEL, WOOD SPLITTER, CONCRETE TOOLS, PLUMB BOB, SPLITTING WEDGES, NON STAINLESS STEEL FASTENERS, GARDEN CART, PUSH BROOM, SNOW SHOVEL, and this is only a partial list . . .

There are other many-many other benefits like no danger of flood, or wild fire, land slide, or trees falling on you, earthquake shaking your house to the ground, a gas line explosion, downed power lines, freeze damages, snow fall burying you, having an ant or flea problem, or any dust, mud or spiders, leaves to rake, faucets or plants to cover up/protect, shingles or roofing tin to worry bout in a wind storm, fire restrictions on bbq or warming fires,no termite problems, no taxes, no door-to-door sales/religion/canvassers,

LAST LOAD TO THE COAST ! - POST # 12

Made the last trailer load rrom Oakridge to the Florence holding-storage today !

Filled the van to a "one thin mint" level, and now await loading onto the boat... we today are officially one Aerostar van-load away from being completely gone and "out"  of Oakridge... and living, and being based in Florence.

That last load will be kitties, the kitchen/bath daily necessities, our fold up table and two fold-up chairs and a few clothes and blankets, the bed is being donated, and we are officially gone !

Exactly "when" that happens is the question....

"I" DAY - POST # 11

"INSPECTION" Day . . . if you were ever in the military, you remember "Inspection Day".

Having/Enduring a Real Estate Inspection (for a house sale) is not much different, yet, it is;  . . . when you were in the service of our country you had signed off on not being governed by the Bill of Rights or the US Constitution, so, you had no choice but to comply according to the USMC of J.

Not much changes with selling your home.... if you thought those days of being told how to dress, act, and live were over , the government inspired Real Estate "rules" (and those fancy car-driving/over-dressed pompous agents) re-create that atmosphere where you (once again) . . . have no choice but to be ashamed of your slovenly lifestyle, embarassed at your pathetic choices of decorating and level of achieved wealth, and then comply to their will.

The inspection process is identical, and conducted by those who would be above ever being "inspected" themselves due to their higher (than you) station, resultingly you are to be revealed and judged by their standard, so, shut up - stare at your shoes when they enter the room, and simply agree with their decisions.  or fail, after all you are not in their league of social class, education, wealth or other.

A chenille bedspread ? OMG ! what peasants

And "who" would paint their house pink ? commies I bet

They only drive a pickup truck !

And . . . they have animals "in" their house !

Really cheap-ass furniture, and a small TV

I see that they drink beer, yuk !

Lets watch them dance. . . tell them they have peeling paint (lead based), and their electrical system needs a new service box. oh...also that their sewer is clogged up and needs replacing. their roof "could" leak . . .  that will fix their sorry ass existance, how do people accomplish so little in life anyway ?

plus, we have (as accomplished/wealthy/educated) a need to set an example, and maintain "who" is in control of our society and world for these primitives by  'forcing' them to follow "our" protocol.

BASEBOARD AND GUTTERS - POST 10

WHEW, There are many many things in life that reveal us, most of the time we "choose" to reveal information about ourselves (creating a blog, a website, going on Facebook, Twitter, telling people about ourselves in person), this especially is a plan of action when we feel we are not being "recognized", and our ego suffers from the slight.

Personally, I have always tried to be judged/viewed/compared by my actions, character, and skills or abilities . . . but that only works "nowadays" when the atmosphere is open to actually "seeing" you, and certainly not in the overbearing company of the precocious,  small minded, or class-conscience.

I grew up in a "see me" "I am better than you" "here is how you are "supposed to" live-think-act" family , so, I can easily identify the traits when seen in others (especially when they try to enforce their beliefs and lifestyles on me).

Small mindedness, a lack of worldly exposure, an over bloated self-esteem, not being well travelled, and prejudice create this ignorance, and it is  identified world-wide as the "Ugly American" tourist, businessman, politician, or citizen. Differences in ethnicity, religion, culture, society, wealth, education and intent are ALWAYS overlooked, and ignored by this type, because "you are supposed to do it this way" !

When talking about moving aboard a boat full-time, the criricism begins, after all . . . you are "supposed to" live in a house !  more later after the house sells

CONTINUOUS CRUISER BARGEE'S - POST # 9

There is, (and has been) a search  on for affordable housing (world-wide), a large portion of the world's population has moved onto the water . . . many of this lot are third-fourth generation-historic boat/barge dwellers, others are "newbies", none-the-less all around the globe, the governments have the same response and action-plan for boat people.

For Centuries, onshore there have been nomadics, gypsys, and tribal peoples that were "free" of any encumberances/taxes/control or other form of government authority. In 2016 this has unfortunately been exploited by what we all call "street people" (hobo's, vagrants, bums, derelicts, whatever).

Before the 60's Hippie era, this class of citizenry never really existed anywhere but in Wino-alleys, and as boxcar jumpers on the road, here in the warmer West of the US we are now overwhelmed with "street people" . . . Eugene Oregon being a top location, where almost every corner has a panhandler/beggar.

Brazil, and India discard their lllegitimate babies to the street by the hundreds, America claims these  street people are all veterans with PTSD, druggies, alcoholics or mentally disordered people, and the total numbers are collectively staggering.

If you are educated, employed, family oriented, and somewhat wealthy (a bad term) then you are in the absolute majority of society. The blinders that the majority wears are so restrictive that they "miss" the reasoning of "why" all of these street  nomads exist. . . so, in their confusion they accommodate and help them on the one hand, but, on the other they persecute and bully them.

STARTING OVER - POST # 8 6 September, 2016

We found a boat that had been on the market 19+ months, and incrementally was being reduced in price . . . as the owner showed us through, we both “ knew” . . .

HE “HAD” OUR BOAT . . . but, the price, was more than we planned on by $5,000.00, and beyond what we could afford, but it was . . . was a . . . well, could we do it?.

On the way home we determined, we’re in trouble” meaning, paying more than we really wanted to pay, but we decided that we would try to get this boat !. . . somehow. Any boat that has been owned and taken care of by someone who has things done right, is a boat that reflects pride of ownership, and is usually owned by people who must sell because of advancing age, financial situation, death, simple life-change or declining health . . . and this was one of those distress sales, —-having been heavily discounted “to sell” (and at 50%-of all 12 of the other comparables on the market), but, due to its remote harbor location, and a "telephone-only" owner-contact both being severe handicaps, it simply got no showings.

60 DAYS IN (4 SEPTEMBER) - POST # 7

Generally, commercial and work boats (trawlers, tugs, cargo) boats are over 40 foot and under 150, anything bigger is indeed a “ship”, anything smaller . . . well.

Of course, these are not “sail boats”, but engine driven craft . . .  many crew, or fast supply boats can have four props, and they functionally operate like a twin propeller boat, which is quite different than how a single screw boat operates.

To a boat lover, or a crew member/passenger none of this matters or is even something you would ever be aware of when aboard, but to a boat “operator” or a Captain, this is ominous.  At sea, and simply navigating, the twin works like a single - and both engines controls are usually worked as one (together), it is safe to say that “any” experienced captain can go from point A to point B at sea with ease on any type of craft.

But getting away from the dock, and returning to the dock, however . . . can embarrass, humiliate, flummox, and destroy the ego of any salty sea boat captain easily (when not familiar with the twin screw arrangement). I learned my lesson many years ago, so let me share.

Perhaps 80% + of the worlds watercraft  (Canoe to Cargo ship) are single screw.  That other 20% is made up of Yachts, Power Sports Fishers, and only recently many really big ships have twin or quad screws.

What this means is that the breadth of knowledge and wealth of marine experience is with single screw boats.
Single screw boats have huge rudders for steering and control, twin-prop boats have tiny rudders and use the engines instead, this is the dilemma-difference.

The feel and Finesse a twin screw captain learns and understands, is NOT something a single screw captain could ever know about, until he actually tries to dock . . . using engines rather than rudder.

“Alert the harbor ! break out the bullhorns, shoot off the flares, man the davits-get those lifeboats in the water ! clear the docks of women & children, move your boat out of the area, break out the clowns, gather the crowd for a huge laugh-in, and locate as many fenders as you can . . . PeterB is going to dock (sorta’) a twin screw” . . . DO NOT MISS THIS !

For me, I would have saved face, and been better off shutting down, swimming to the dock with a bow line in my mouth, and “handlining” it into its berth, but then, who would have entertained these assembled masses of cheering/laughing/instruction yelling onlookers ? Who would they make fun of for the next few years ?

That was my first and last time to try twin screw…. As a guy who laughs at bow/stern thrusters, for the twin engine powered So fea I really need one of those Ford self-parking devices (until I learn), a sequel to my last fiasco is not something I look forward to in moving from Winchester to Florence. Hopefully, the old boat owner will escort-Captain us to our new harbor and save me a repeat.
